Themed Dinner
One of our most favorite ways to savor time together with family (and savor some delicious food at the same time) is to do a themed dinner. Themed dinners are special because they take an ordinary act and make it into something memorable and enjoyable. Pick a theme and get the whole family involved. Prepare a menu, bust out the special dishes (whether that means themed plates from the dollar store or fancy heirloom china), and get cooking together. Bonus points for getting into character with costumes! After the meal is prepared, take extra time to sit together and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Bring a list of intentional questions to ask each other or just linger around the table a little longer than usual. Here’s a few ideas to get you started.

- Movie/book themed- Prepare a feast fit for hobbits for Lord of the Rings or a Hawaiian-themed meal for Lilo & Stitch. This is an especially fun one for costume purposes!
- World cuisine- Italian, Greek, Mexican, Korean, the sky is the limit with this theme.
- Picnic night- Even if you're not going outdoors, serve foods you would take on a picnic. Throw a blanket on the floor and eat right in the living room or take the party outside to a local park or beach
- Fancy- Pretend you are going to Michelin star restaurant. Have the kids make invitations or placecards, everyone can dress up in their Sunday best, use your best dishes, and cook something a little extra special. This could also involve learning dinner etiquette, proper table-setting techniques, and practicing good table manners. Don't forget to set the vibe by adding some ambient music!
- Murder mystery- If you’re looking to have a little extra fun, plan a murder mystery game for your family to enjoy alongside your dinner. Choose characters ahead of time and have everyone dress up accordingly. A little case of “who dun it” can bring out the fun side of anyone!
Think you've got what it takes to build a family legacy you're proud of?
