Stewarding Your Kids

"Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him." -Psalm 127:3
Parenting is one of the greatest callings in life—a sacred stewardship entrusted to us by God. Psalm 127:3 reminds us that our children are not possessions to be managed, but souls placed under our care to be nurtured and guided. As Christian parents, we are called to not just raise children but to shepherd their hearts, intentionally leading them toward wisdom, faith, and a deep relationship with Christ.
Practical Ways to Steward Your Children:
- Be intentional about teaching faith – Deuteronomy 6:6-7 instructs us to impress God’s commandments upon our children, to talk about them throughout our daily lives. This means weaving Scripture into everyday life, modeling its truth through our actions, and making faith a natural part of their upbringing.
- Nurture their unique gifts- Each of our children were uniquely created by God, with their own talents and abilities. 1 Peter 4:10 reminds us that we should use our gifts to serve others. We can help our children discover their gifts, encourage their passions, and remind them that God created them to glorify Him in all that they do.
- Discipline in love- Hebrews 12:11 acknowledges that discipline yields “a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” Loving discipline isn't just about behavior modification but is rather a powerful opportunity to point your children to the truth of the Gospel. When our children make a mistake, we can remind them that we all fall short, but Jesus offers forgiveness and true transformation. We can lead with love, asking heart-probing questions that reveal their need for a Savior and teach them about repentance, grace, and restoration.
- Prepare them for the world- The world is filled with distractions and challenges. We can equip our children with a solid foundation in Christ so they will be strong in their convictions. Teach them how to stand firm in their faith, how to navigate adversity with grace, and how to extend Christ’s love to others by giving them opportunities to practice these things under your guidance. Encourage them to come to you with their questions and create a safe space for them to do so. Show them how to develop their prayer life, teaching them that God is their ever-present help.
- Trust God with their future- Ultimately, our children belong to God. Psalm 31:15 reminds us that while we can do our best to nurture and guide them, their future is in His capable and sovereign hands. Pray daily for their protection, wisdom, and spiritual growth and then entrust them to the Lord, knowing He has a plan and purpose for their lives.
Parenting is a lifelong journey, filled with challenges and joys. As stewards of God’s precious children, seek Him daily for wisdom, patience, and strength. Love them deeply, lead them well, and trust in the promises of God for their lives.
