Faithful In Suffering

Perhaps one of the most difficult times to remain faithful and steadfast is during times of suffering. Unfortunately, we can often find ourselves in situations that do not look the way we thought they would or fulfill our dreams the way we hoped they would, situations that can shake us to our core and leave us feeling stuck or hopeless. It is how we respond when we face these situations that define us. Jesus warned his disciples that in this world they would have trouble, but offered hope- “take heart, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Maybe you are walking through the loss of a loved one or a job. Maybe you’re facing a difficult medical diagnosis or are struggling with building your family because of unexpected infertility. Maybe you feel like your marriage is falling apart or maybe you are experiencing unexpected conflict or unplanned obstacles in your path. The events that upend our lives do not take God by surprise but offer an opportunity for His deeper work if we remain faithful to trust Him and yield ourselves to His good and sovereign will.

Here are a few practical tips to help you remain faithful in the midst of suffering:

  • Hold fast to the promises of God

In moments of suffering, it’s easy to feel abandoned or forgotten by God. In these moments, it is more important than ever to cling to the promises of God. In Isaiah 41:10, God tells His people, "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." God’s promises remind us that He is not distant or indifferent in our suffering; He is present and He is acquainted with our suffering. He has compassion on us and He promises to work all things for His glory and our good, even when we cannot understand.

  • Stay rooted in prayer and Scripture

Psalm 34:18 reminds us, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." God is near to us in our pain, and one of the ways we experience His presence is through prayer. The Bible also offers truth and encouragement to anchor us even in the midst of deep sorrow and pain. The Psalms, in particular, are filled with cries of distress and yet also declarations of hope in God. Memorizing and meditating on these Scriptures can serve as a powerful weapon against despair.

  • Lean into community

We were never meant to walk through suffering alone. God has placed us in a community of believers to support and encourage one another. Galatians 6:2 says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” In times of pain, the church can be a source of comfort, prayer, and practical help. Sharing your struggles with trusted brothers and sisters in Christ can also bring healing. There is great power in community, in being reminded that others care for you and are willing to walk alongside you through whatever trial you are experiencing.
